As any significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another creative title missed out that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
