Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
