Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
