EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
