Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
