At least thirteen people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
